As part of its commitment to improving the lives of street children in Africa, Retrak is inviting practitioners to attend its two-day conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia September 27,28 to share the knowledge and skills needed to work with the most marginalised children. The theme is ‘Helping Street Children to Return Home’.
Refer to: http://www.retrak.org/newsDetail.aspx?uid=123 for further details.

This conference aims to improve the knowledge, skills and capacity for supporting family based care through interactive discussions, lectures and working groups.

Participants will work together to identify and examine current practise in working with street children, covering topics including;
 • Re-unification and Re-integration
 • Foster Care
 • Attachment Theory
 • Child Development
 • Child Protection
 • Economic Strengthening

The conference follows directly the recommendations from the First International Conference in Africa on Family Based Care for Children held in Nairobi in 2009, where 419 delegates from 45 countries outlined the steps needed for a concerted and deliberate effort to further develop family-based care approaches.
As well as allowing attendants to learn from each other’s experience, Retrak hopes this conference will promote collaborative effort amongst organisations with similar values and approaches, allowing them to pool knowledge and resources beyond the two days spent in Addis Ababa. The conference will conclude with a joint statement / declaration from attendees and the publication of a report to be wider disseminated amongst the sector street children sector worldwide.

“This conference addresses the needs highlighted by fellow street children organisations and it is very exciting that Retrak has the opportunity to facilitate this shared learning. We hope that organisations working hard with these children every day take this chance to share their experiences and learn from leaders in this field” Diarmuid O Neill, CEO
