Since April this year RELAF has been engaged in many activities for the effective implementation of the Guidelines on Alternative Care and the promotion of de-institutionalization and the development of family- based alternative care.
After the presentation of the friendly versions of the Guidelines on Alternative Care for the personnel of public and private institutions and for children (elaborated with the support of UNICEF Tacro) during the Quality for Care Conference in Prague, workshops have been carried out in different Latin American entities to apply them. The versions are available in Spanish and Portuguese, and the English version has also been launched. (The workshops carried out with children can be watched at http://www.youtube.com/user/AcogimientoFamiliar?feature=mhee). Those workshops were also carried out with members of international bodies, experts and governmental and non-governmental organization of almost all the Latin American countries (many of them have replicated or will replicate the experience in their countries) during the Sub-Regional Consultations for the elaboration of the Study of the Situation of Institutionalized Childhood in the Americas of UNICEF and the Inter American Commission on Human Rights. RELAF took part actively in the production of this document, among other writing two reports on violation of the Human Rights of children deprived of parental care: “Institutionalized childhood and adolescence: making serious Human Rights violations visible” and “Migrant children and adolescents: framework and situation for the fulfillment of their Human Rights”.  It is worthwhile to highlight that all our materials are available in English at
